Tax Based on Residence or Phone Number

I live in AB which has a GST of 5%, but my automated top ups are charged at 13% HST. I spoke to a (very friendly) chat representative who told me that because my phone number is an Ontario number, it’s charged Ontario tax rates.

I’m not a tax specialist by any means but this doesn’t sound right? In fact my first manual top up was charged 5% tax when I opened the account. Thoughts?

Hey there @Mitchell

Welcome to the community and thanks for your post.

In your case, the taxes will depend on the payment method chosen. If you purchase a voucher in a store, then the taxes will refer to the locality where you're physically situated and if you purchase a top-up of any kind online via My Account, it will refer to the taxes associated with your phone numbers area.
