Temporarily pause service

Is it possible to pause service for a few months when out of the country, then resume service when I return? I don't want to cancel and lose my phone number, just to start a new one again when I get back in the country.

Weak indoor signal

I've read through the info regarding international calling and I don't see the United States listed anywhere except for the US Virgin Islands and the 50/month plan. How does one call a US number using a low-end voice plan, and what is the rate?
